Butterfly Plants & Gardening
Butterfly plants and
gardens are simple way to enjoy more butterflies as well as support their
conservation. Basically you want to grow the plants that the caterpillars
eat, as well as plants that the adult butterflies will feed on! For
each butterfly species' larva (caterpillar) will only feed on specific
plant species.
We can help you decide which
butterfly nectar plants and butterfly host plants you will need to plant
in order to establish your own butterfly garden.
DO NOT USE PESTICIDES IN
YOUR GARDEN!
Some Basics
Most butterfly plants should
be located in a sunny location (4-6 hours each day), but protected from
the winds. Butterflies need the sun to warm themselves, but they won't
feed in an areas with windy conditions.
A couple of flat rocks located
in the sunny spot will allow butterflies warm up.
Like all living things, butterflies
require water.
Try to keep a mud puddle
damp in a sunny location or a container with sand and enough water to moisten
the sand.
